European Association of Cochlear Implant Users

 

The European Association of Cochlear Implant Users (EURO-CIU) was founded 1995 in Luxembourg. The association represents on European level the interest of deaf or hearing impaired people, who have regained hearing perceptions through a Cochlear Implant (CI) device.

The statutes assure, that in the governing bodies of EURO-CIU only hearing impaired persons and/or their relatives have a mandate and voting rights. The Meeting is formed by 4 persons by Cochlear Implant and 4 parents of an implanted child.

For the moment 2 European countries are members of EURO-CIU either with comparable national associations or individual membership.

Thus EURO-CIU, representing thousands of hearing impaired and implanted persons, is one of the biggest European NGO for disabled people and the only one which operates in three main EU languages: German, English and French.

EURO-CIU is full member of the European Disability Forum (EDF). Its activities are mainly assured by volunteer commitments and donations.

They have been organized symposiums in Prague (1997), Salzburg (1999), Barcelona (2001), Berlin (2003), Antalya (2005), Nottingham (2007) and Zaragoza (2009). Annual assemblies in: Luxembourg, Munich, Prague, Lyon, Salzburg, London, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Berlin, Gotenbourg, Antalya, Barcelona, Nottingham, Luxembourg, Zaragoza and Varese.

The 2nd international symposium on "CI and school environment" in Salzburg (1999) had been published as conference proceedings in three languages.

EURO-CIU is a registered non-governmental and non-profit making association which according to its statute has following objectives:

  • Recognition of the obligation by health insurance services regarding CIs.
  • Support all measures towards special CI related training for pedagogical experts in the field of hearing impaired persons
  • Guarantee of an adequate individual rehabilitation, or basic education for CI users.
  • Promotion of CI user related communication and information systems.
  • Promotion of research and development in the medical and technical fields of CI.
  • Raising awareness, information dissemination and public relation.

The Spanish portal on the Cochlear Implant reaches one million visitors PDF Print E-mail

On August 4, the Spanish website www.implantecoclear.org registered one million visitors.

Opened in 1997, soon becoming the first non-commercial site in Spanish on the Cochlear Implant, remain the most important current within the Hispanic world.

Several have been the webmaster responsible for their development and maintenance, stressing the voluntary nature of all of them and still maintained today.

Some curiosities:

  • 5 have been design reforms that have taken place since 1997.
  • one million visits occurred between 17 and 18 hours (Spanish local time, GMT +2) on the day August 4, 2010.
  • The busiest day occurred on June 2, 2010 with 1078 visits.
  • The country from which you receive more visits, ignoring Spain, Argentina.
  • European country from where you are visiting is Portugal.
  • Days there are more visits are on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Saturday being the least.
  • More month increase in visits has been in relation to the year 2009 was in February with 29%.
  • Visits from the Americas account for 31.1%.
  • Have received visits from such disparate places as Japan, Australia, South Africa, Jordan, Israel, China ...
  • Since 2001 the website is edited from Zaragoza
